My love affair with horses began as a young girl reading the story of National Velvet. The themes of sensitivity to animals, woman’s strength, equality and creativity continue to resonate with me. One of my favorite books influenced by National Velvet is The Mare written by National book award winner Mary Gaitskill. Based on National Velvet, it’s the story of an inner city Dominican Girl who goes to live in the country and falls in love with a horse which has profound life altering effects.
